Bohdan Holomicek was born in 1943 in Sienkiewiczowka in Ukraine to a Ukrainian mother and a Czech father from the community of Volhynia (province of Ukraine where a Czech minority lives). At the end of the war, the family emigrated to Mlade Buky, a large town on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic. Of the five children, only three survived in very difficult living conditions. It is in this mountainous region that the photographer still lives, in the official accommodation of the small electricity plant where he worked as an electrician until his retirement. In 1956, he received his first camera as a Christmas gift. Since then and until recent times, Bohdan Holomicek has taken thousands of amateur photographs. It is a powerful and touching work which, in its own way, documents a whole section of the history of the Czech Republic. His images, however, speak to us directly, and this is undoubtedly both the mark of great talent but also of immense generosity. All his work, whether it concerns his village, Vaclav Havel his neighbor and friend, the theater... speaks only of one and the same thing, his passion for Man when he exercises his freedom, his generosity and his curiosity. Svitani is a very small part of the photographer's prolific production, an invitation to come and discover the world of an atypical and endearing photographer.
