In the heart of Europe, a parallel world existed for almost ten years. Refugees from Africa but also the Middle East were waiting here to cross the Channel and go to Great Britain. It is from the Persian jangal, meaning “forest”, that the word, simplified by the media, became “jungle”. It was a city of 7,000 people that was built and then disappeared. Photographer Henk Wildschut has documented the changing situation in Calais since 2006 and has witnessed the incredibly rapid transformation of small camps into an informal town starting in 2015. A town with restaurants, bakeries, mosques, a church, shops and even hammams. Henk Wildschut has photographed this growth systematically. The city was dismantled at the end of October 2016. In 2011, together with graphic designer Robin Uleman, Henk Wildschut published the book Shelter , which won numerous awards. This work gave a central place to the temporary shelters that the refugees had built in the forests of Calais. These cabins were the symbol of individual strength and tenacity. In the book Ville de Calais, he turns to the power of the masses. A mass capable of building a city and thus showing that it can no longer be marginalized.
