“There are those who go around constantly comparing their own experience and culture with what they see: I have the opposite attitude, I let myself be carried along by what I see and become involved, especially by the landscape and its transformation.” So Marco Zanuso describes his way of travelling. The Milanese architect travelled the world for work in years when very few did so, yet he preserved an undiminished pleasure in discovery even on private trips, during which he had the habit of taking photographs. This happens on a family journey to a Yemen not yet touched by tourism. In the magnificent black‑and‑white images of the walls of Sana’a, of the great towers made of dried mud bricks, as well as of construction details and of the costumes of the local population, we are given back the architect’s curious gaze. The texts by Maria Pace Ottieri and Franco Raggi focus on his humanity and professional qualities, tracing the portrait of one of the great architects and designers of the 20th century.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
