The wall stood between East Berliner Sibylle Bergemann and the wider world until November 9, 1989. Until this night, Timbuktu, Bangkok, Dakar are nothing more than names with a longing sound. Then time turns, and Sibylle Bergemann's wanderlust, cherished throughout her life, finds its fulfillment: she sets off for Yemen, Thailand, Ghana, Vietnam, India, Nepal, Mali, and allows herself to be carried away by foreign cultures, people and lifestyles, and exotic locations. She photographs reports – in color. This is also a discovery for a photographer who actually sees herself in the tradition of social documentary black and white photography. Sibylle Bergemann's color images of opulent African festivals and fashion shows, her portraits and landscape images tell of this late love, poetically and powerfully at the same time.
