Mitch Epstein comes from a Jewish-American family. Many of his ancestors fell victim to the Holocaust. So it made sense to look for traces of the Shoah in Berlin. But Epstein doesn't just focus on the "Third Reich." It shows different eras that have been deposited on top of each other like layers of rock in Berlin. Elephants grazing peacefully in Lichtenberg; Mannequins with sparkling white teeth on a billboard at Checkpoint Charlie; the Dalai Lama on a monitor at the Brandenburg Gate - Epstein shows Berlin's penchant for the surreal and pours human pathos into a complex form.
