More than sixty years later, a Sunday excursion to the Po Delta becomes a memorable portrait of a poverty-stricken Italy that we have now forgotten, erased by the economic boom and what followed. Nino Migliori was not yet a professional photographer, but his curiosity about places, situations, and people was already intense. The Po Delta, a peripheral area with poverty considered endemic, is captured in shots that reveal the difficult coexistence between man and nature. The relationship with the river is central, but the photographs feature unpaved roads and simple interiors with few objects; the children resemble small adults. A boy on a Vespa is the first sign of nascent prosperity. "Lyrical historical documents," Vasco Brondi calls them in his heartfelt introduction. The volume is rounded out with critical essays by Corrado Benigni and Mauro Zanchi.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
