Text by Heinrich Detering

Until his death in April 2015, Günter Grass lived and worked south of Lübeck in rural Schleswig-Holstein. His workshop was just a few steps away from the house: a former stable building with two floors. Here were bookshelves, the standing desk at which he wrote by hand and with the Olivetti portable typewriter, the pin board for work plans and sketches, the potter's wheel, the workbench for lithography and sculpture molding. Grass did not work in a studio or in a library, but explicitly in “my workshop”.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
