This volume presents the extraordinary collection held in the photographic archive of the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem. The ancient fund of the archive brings together over 18,000 images produced with the aim of documenting the architectural and archaeological heritage not only of the region of Jerusalem but also of other areas of the Holy Land and neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Jordan and Syria. These photographs were often produced in support of popular or scientific publications and are therefore characterised by an objectivity necessary for the study of real data. The images document an urban panorama unique in the world, in which the historical evidence of cultural and religious traditions in conflict with one another, but obliged to coexist for centuries, intertwines inextricably – a fascinating cross-section of the cultural and religious stratification of the city of Jerusalem.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
