Madeleine de Sinéty. Une vie is the first monograph dedicated to the photographer, retracing a work that spans four decades between France and the United States. Self-taught, Madeleine de Sinéty is best known for the project she created in Poilley, a small village in Brittany where she moved in the early Seventies. Here he documented, in color and black and white, the life of the local community with a gaze that was both poetic, rigorous and deeply involved. The entire corpus of his work arises from an extraordinary capacity for observation, which is expressed both in the images created in Paris and New York and in those of Poilley. With sensitivity and discretion, de Sinéty restores an intimate portrait of everyday life, capturing the transformations of a rapidly evolving world and preserving its memory through a photography of rare human intensity. Madeleine de Sinéty began her career as an illustrator for fashion magazines and approached photography in the late 1960s during a trip to Iran. In 1972 he moved to Poilley, Brittany. In the 1980s he settled in the United States. His work, also appreciated by the photographer Mary Ellen Mark, was exhibited at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in 1996 and rediscovered in 2020 with the exhibition Un village, dedicated to the series created in Poilley. This book was published on the occasion of the first retrospective dedicated to his work, exhibited in Paris at the Jeu de Paume from June to September 2026.
