The work of Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji (born in Gaza in 1966, lives in Paris) is indivisible from the collective history of his land and his people, although seen through the prism of personal events. Using photography and video, drawing and painting, sculpture and installation, he creates works tinged with a sense of impermanence and fragility, which explore the boundary between visible and invisible, material and immaterial, presence and absence. Poetic reflection and bitter irony are the means with which Batniji addresses the trauma of uprooting and the representation of disappearance. This book, whose title is taken from a verse by Mahmud Darwish, recounts his exhibition Abitare il tempo, held in the spaces of the Ago Foundation in Modena, and presents two recent cycles of works: Out of the Blue and Remnants, the latter born from a painful meditation on the images of the genocide in the Gaza Strip.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
