A man posing, at the center of the scene - and in the central fold of the double page - flanked on the right and left by an equal number of women. It is around this compositional constant that the selection of archive images collected by Erik Kessels in this new volume is structured. But what does this provision really reveal? Is it the result of a conscious gesture, an instinctive reflex, or a mere coincidence? And again: is it an iconographic repertoire now consigned to the past, or a legacy destined to resurface, unchanged, every time a man or several women put themselves in front of a goal? These are the questions that Kessels seems to want to insinuate into the viewer, with his unmistakable language, imbued with irony and ambiguity, and with his extraordinary ability to make the archives of vernacular photography speak, transforming them into revealing mirrors of the society we inhabit.
