Small Death collects photographs taken by artist Martha Naranjo Sandoval in the first years she lived in New York after emigrating from Mexico City. The book is an artist's book that unfolds in tactile and iterative form. Sandoval's work moves between streetscapes, nude self-portraits, tender photographs of her family, all suffused with sensitivity to the way her surroundings, her loved ones, and her home continually shape her sense of self and belonging. The artist's husband, parents and brothers are portrayed in their homes and in more distant rural and urban landscapes between the United States and Mexico, tracing a continuum between displacement and rootedness. Meanwhile, the self-portraits in the foreground, scattered throughout, serve as records of the determined introspection that animates this powerful exploration of the sequence of images and the form of the book as a means of physical and sensual expression.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
