The work of Ray K. Metzker (1931–2014) breaks convention by combining different disciplines. Although exhibited at the MoMA in New York as early as 1967 and then in the main American museums, it achieved fame very late. This monographic volume, awaited for several years, is a due tribute. The book features 150 black-and-white photographs, mostly drawn from the archives of the Ray K. Metzker Estate in Philadelphia. The urban landscapes marked by vertical and horizontal lines, double exposures, overlapping negatives and grid structures reveal the author's extraordinary ability to dominate light and composition, establishing Metzker as one of the great masters of American photography. The images are accompanied by texts by Carrie Springer, former curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Vicki Harris of the Metzker Estate in Philadelphia. The book was edited by Françoise Morin and Philippe Séclier, also curators of the exhibition R ay K. Metzker: City Lux held at the A Foundation in Brussels in 2024.
