Following an exhibition of the same title at Sargent’s Daughters gallery in New York and in conjunction with a new exhibition at Seventeen Gallery in London, Erin O’Keefe’s new publication, “I saw the man with a telescope”, is a vibrant, almost psychedelic collection of Erin O’Keefe’s latest works, a highly anticipated follow-up to “Built Work”, published in 2020 by Jane & Jeremy. Erin O'Keefe creates still life photographs that explore the unreliability of spatial perception, highlighting the dynamic nature of visual interpretation. Continuing his process of cutting and painting woodblocks, O'Keefe explores different compositions against colorful backgrounds, resulting in images that are often
confused with abstract paintings. Closer examination reveals O'Keefe's playful use of light and space and the nature of the process: the overlapping of blocks and shadows, as well as the rich texture of the crudely painted surfaces. The title of the book is “I saw the man with a telescope”. it alludes to the ambiguity of images and the impossibility of a univocal interpretation. The plane of the camera lens flattens and distorts the three-dimensional scene it captures, and the viewer finds himself faced with disconcerting images that deprive him of any certainty, living in a space of possibility and speculation. Edition of only 200 numbered copies including an original photograph signed by the author
