For five years the photographer Monica Beurer took part in the life of Carole Piguet, who has suffered since birth from brittle-bone disease — disabled, or indeed a “cripple,” as she self-confidently and combatively puts it. Beurer succeeds in making pictures that are not about a “problem,” but about a woman, a personality full of grace and joie de vivre, adventurousness and pride. They are again and again close and touching pictures of Carole Piguet's face, of her wonderful eyes, which have the power not to conceal the suffering and yet to overcome the frailty of her body.
