The film stills of Nazis that the New York-based, Polish-born artist Piotr Uklański has assembled for this book show exclusively men staring imperiously, dully or threateningly, or smiling painfully and cynically. They are all clad in Nazi uniforms, fitted out with any number of swastikas, Reich eagles and skull symbols. Some wear monocles or black eye-patches. It is about the power of disguise and the disguise of power, about the glamour of evil, the gleam and shimmer of false medals of false gold. It is not about Nazis, but about Hollywood Nazis, about the poses of evil, the staging of the cynical gaze from pale-blue eyes.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
