Andro Wekua's Georgian hometown of Sukhumi — once a holiday destination for Soviet functionaries, a picturesque coastal town with lemon trees — is today a restricted zone and thus remains a reservoir of memory: grandmother's house, the Black Sea, the ping-pong table behind the house, the monumental freighter at the quay, political turmoil. From these fragments Wekua constitutes atmospheric images and synthesizes biographical fragments. On one drawing, in scrawled writing, stands “I see,” below it the addition “Black see.”
