RothStauffenberg's work circles around cinematic space. Mostly these are real film sets, seen only through a window, in which the light, sound and music change — like films compressed in time, but without actors and without plot. RothStauffenberg discuss these fictions with the North Korea–born film director Shin Jun-chul, now 70 and living in Mozambique, where he came after independence in 1977 to help build the country's new cinema. In 2007 RothStauffenberg staged a masked ball at the Grand Hotel in Beira, Mozambique — once “the pride of Africa” — and made a film there.
