Memories of grandparents are at first childhood memories of old people. But what do we know of earlier times, when the grandparents were young? They are our most personal link to a past we know only from films and books. How did the grandparents live and love back then? What remains of a life? In his long-term project Meine Grosseltern – Erinnerungsbüro (My Grandparents – Memory Office), Mats Staub pursues these questions by inviting grandchildren of various ages to talk and presenting their memories in site-specific installations. A constantly growing international archive of subjective stories arises, alongside a collection of photographs showing grandparents in their youth — memory-images from amateur photographers, ritual photography.
