The Mittelland — a landscape strewn with buildings, oscillating between nature and urbanity. A world full of interfaces and grey zones, where town and country, nature and settlements, public and private space merge. Is the Mittelland one giant agglomeration, a single sprawling settlement? Michael Blaser too grew up in the agglomeration and is perhaps for that reason interested in its peculiarities. His pictures are not landscape and architectural photographs but social documentations. In the domesticated landscapes with their infrastructures, today's Switzerland is reflected — a country striving for a modern, urban identity yet unable to shed its provincial image. No people are visible in Blaser's pictures, yet their presence is palpable; the sober façades let one sense the inner life and inhabitants of the houses.
