Since 2003 the artist Daniela Comani has been working on her photographic project Eine glückliche Ehe (A Happy Marriage). In it she investigates role and gender attributions through the representation of her own person, letting the happy married couple slip into everyday situations. Comani is her own model, staging herself in her multi-part photo series simultaneously as man and as woman in a modern intellectual marriage in which gender relations should no longer matter. Yet facial expression, gesture, pose and clothing speak their own language. The man/woman gender position in dependence on the heterosexual couple constellation appears so irritatingly that the question of who is who and who plays whom subtly and subversively collapses.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
