The Diary of Lev Afor is the third picture-story of the Lev Afor trilogy by the Israeli artist couple Adi Kaplan and Shahar Carmel. Just as the artist couple lives with their cat, the fictional cat Lev Afor (“Grey Heart”) lives with a young human couple, her biological parents, in an apartment in southern Tel Aviv. While Lev Afor (2010) tells of the cat's surreal birth and The Parents of Lev Afor (2006) of her childhood shaped by parental money worries, the teenage diary of the now 16-year-old cat-daughter tells, in double-page oil-pastel and graphite drawings with texts running over the images, a sensitive coming-of-age story. Through their main character, Kaplan and Carmel reflect on youth in Israel and the tensions and ambivalences to which young Israelis are exposed today, slipping repeatedly into other roles to play out the everyday problems of an ordinary couple.
