In 1979 Catherine Ceresole moved to New York with her husband Nicolas, who was to train as a sound engineer. The real reason, however, was the city's underground music scene, which had captivated the couple. Soon they were friends with numerous musicians, and Catherine began photographing them at concerts and in intimate settings. Thus arose a unique documentation of the heyday of the New York punk, no-wave and avant-garde scene. With a sharp eye for dramatic moments she captured them all — Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, Glenn Branca, Arto Lindsay, Christian Marclay, the Beastie Boys and many more. Even after her return to Switzerland she continued to photograph musicians and bands. The book is a visual music history of recent decades and presents the work of a singular photographer to a wider public for the first time. With texts by Christian Marclay, Thurston Moore, Rhys Chatham, Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht and others.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
