Warm Equations is a monograph that is not a monograph: a study of an unstable, mutable object. With the paintings of New York–based artist Alan Reid as a cipher, the book circles around how he defers his authorship and shifts the emphasis from his work onto a multitude of voices and contributors. These voices storm the stage from outside, voice their own concerns and set textual tempos and rhythms that run amok non-hierarchically, introducing their own ambient metaphors. Amid Reid's pictures, each text represents a voice in a fragmented chorus. The dramaturgical chorus, traditionally united in its simultaneous interventions, here splits into different levels of language. The chorus takes part in the action only by marking what it says as an interlude, a mediated pause. Warm Equations assembles such interludes, reshaping the figure of the protagonist into something always already manifold. The chorus catches up with the theatre. With texts by Matthew Brannon, Corina Copp, Jill Gasparina, Kristen Kosmas, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Alan Reid, Lisa Robertson, Chris Sharp, Rachel Valinsky and Jamieson Webster.
