Nik Emch and Laurent Goei have made sound performances together as the artist duo Minimetal for 22 years. The publication MINIMETAL 11 MANTRAS gathers 13 hours of music, videos and 307 photos — a grown collection that now finds expression as a photo book. QR codes scanned with a smartphone lead directly to the video and audio content; the book becomes a sound carrier, and a journey from VHS to HD recording. Founded in 1994 in Zürich, the duo realizes musical-visual art projects, playing in underground cellars and the white cubes of galleries. Their “sound sculptures” are a raging torrent of sounds and images — guitar, drums and voice — that sweeps the audience into a hypnotic atmosphere. Minimetal is punk, rock, art and above all a life project. In the early nineties they composed eleven songs with the idea of playing “Minimetal” — as a duo, mini but with much force, metal. To this day they remain faithful to these eleven songs, which have become their eleven mantras, reinterpreted again and again as pop, noise, techno or punk. From the start they avoided the usual rock-show venue, putting their rehearsal room into the gallery instead.
