The photo book Tools of Disobedience presents 185 photographs taken in 2014 in the prisons of French-speaking Switzerland. They show objects that inmates secretly made in their cells with the simplest means and that were confiscated over the course of their imprisonment. Mostly they are functional replicas of objects we use in everyday life outside the prison walls. They testify to the extraordinary skill and ingenuity required in this difficult setting with its many constraints: a restricted environment, cheap material, lack of tools, surveillance, but also the need to hide these things. The accessible material is reshaped, joined and repurposed, losing its original function so that something new emerges with new properties: often the objects seem simpler and more vital than their 'normal' counterparts. They were all photographed on site in the manner of archival material; through the neutral, artificial lighting they appear similar to industrial products staged for advertising. In their hybridity, page after page, these objects form a kind of visual lexicon of aberrant and familiar, profound and highly subjective forms. With the text 'Of Things and Men' by Didier Fassin.
