In Swiss German, German and English, the texts speak of love, longing, fate, the suburban train station in Wädenswil and teenage angst. The dog outside the Coop becomes an emblem of the abandoned; the dream woman is sought via classified ad. With mischief and wordplay, one suffers, woos, pines and doubts. For his performances, Jurczok 1001 still uses text sheets even after all these years. In Spoken Beats the sheets used are facsimiled, gathering a large selection of texts — from early rap lyrics to ones oriented toward concrete poetry. Here as there, repetitions generate meaning and humour; speech patterns are exposed, political rabble-rousing caricatured. Language becomes play, not only on stage but in the text itself. The sheets bear all the traces of their use, revealing the performance: deletions, notes, modes of delivery, tempo markings and intonation can be read along, making the performance almost tangible. They are template and document at once. Hieroglyphs and scribbles give the text form beyond language. Spoken Beats is deliberately both the book title and the name of Jurczok 1001's stage format: he writes his lyrics not as print-ready poetry but as stage texts, brought to life only through performance.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
