Hodel / Schumacher / Clavadetscher were an artist trio that existed from 1991 until the death of Martin Hodel in 1995. Martin Hodel and Eric Schumacher studied and lived in Vienna at the time, Andrea Clavadetscher in Zürich. Exhibitions and projects were conceived together on site, while drawings were sent back and forth between the cities and places of their travels. The trio used the most diverse materials and media and opened their art toward subcultural phenomena, especially techno. Luftbad shows their works on paper, an essential aspect of their joint output. They mailed each other pictures that they repeatedly overpainted and added to until they were layered to completion. Each sheet is a dense pictorial narrative, a sensuous forest of signs; together they form a cosmos of images in which influences from art history and pop culture, myth and comic amalgamate as inextricably as the three artistic handwritings. Each cover was individually designed by Eric Schumacher and Andrea Clavadetscher and is unique.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
