Alex Hanimann's work begins in the early 1980s with series of drawings and larger groups of paintings. From 1992 onward, work with language also develops into an independent strand of his practice, moving between existential cipher and anonymous sign, imagination and reality. Wall-filling text works or superimposed texts as slide projections treat linguistic conventions much like found image material. The catalogue raisonné Etwas fehlt (Something Is Missing) documents the photographic research of the past twelve years. From an archive of between two and a half and three and a half thousand images, a selection is published in a chronological yet erratic sequence, the pictures detached from their original contexts and placed into new ones. A specially developed mosaic layout generates tense pages interspersed at random intervals with empty spaces. The photographs are accompanied by an interview between Hans Ulrich Obrist and Alex Hanimann.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
