This book is a moving homage to the work of the Swiss artist Jörg Binz — a selection from a multitude of paintings, above all portraits, and his secretly kept sketchbooks. It contains the surprising, the bizarre and the sublime. Interspersed are literary and biographical texts that open a dialogue with the pictures. The book opens with Binz's own account of his youth as a wayward art student in Lucerne, summoned to the director's office expecting expulsion, only to have his portfolio unexpectedly praised as “sensational” before being sent back to class.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
