Everybody's Atatürk is a visual journey through contemporary Turkish everyday life. Istanbul-born, Switzerland-based photographer Mine Dal travelled large parts of Turkey for this long-term project, capturing the manifold presence of the republic's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938). The result is a multifaceted portrait of Turkish society. In almost every sphere of social life one still encounters the iconic figure of Atatürk: at the tailor, butcher or greengrocer, in the restaurant or school, at the hairdresser and the shoe shop — almost everywhere in public space. More than 80 years after the founder's death, his veneration remains widespread and alive. Atatürk drove the modernization of Turkey along Western lines and fundamentally redefined the country with sweeping social, legal and economic reforms. Mine Dal followed the omnipresence of this historical figure. Her photographs show not only 'everybody's Atatürk' but also everyday life in Anatolian villages, in big cities, mountain and coastal regions. This wide-ranging, carefully crafted documentation also reflects the population's insistence on a cosmopolitan and open Turkey.
