From the middle of the 1950s, anyone who wanted to see naked people on screen went by preference to a naturist film by Werner Kunz (1926-2018). The pioneering works of the Swiss self-made film-maker were largely devoted to showing female nudists, rather less to male ones, in their natural surroundings. Banned by some censorship boards as the offspring of immorality, elsewhere his reels were shown as instructive documentaries about an alternative way of life. The documentary framing of course left the display value of the unclothed bodies untouched, and so his naturist films shifted the boundary of what could be shown.
