In May 1970, Carlo Mollino traveled to Osaka for the Universal Exposition. It was a long journey with stops in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Kyoto. He carried a camera with him and, little by little, seemed to become fascinated by a civilization he had not yet discovered. He was fascinated by women, by traditional sites (temples, gardens, pagodas), but also by new architecture, building details, and the swarming crowds. Mollino captured a Japan suspended between ancient rites and the modernity that would change the face of the country in just a few years, of which the Expo was a foretaste. The book contains texts by Claudio Giunta, Corrado Levi, and Fulvio Ferrari that contextualize the trip and explore Mollino's relationship with photography. The volume is completed by a series of photographs Mollino took on other trips to the East.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
