Before his first monograph there were the days of the Polaroid Kidd. In the early 2000s the artist found his way into photography through an SX-70 camera, at the last gasp of the golden era of Time-Zero film: it was expensive, ten sheets to a roll, but he liked its limitations and its idiosyncrasies, the way it brought out the tones of the railroad, the way the surface of the film could be manipulated, the feel and even the smell of the emulsion. Made between 2004 and 2006, while the camera and the film were being phased out of production, these are the pictures of the people he met while riding freight trains.
