The photos in Hannah Modigh’s book are taken in 2006 in and around the small town of St. Charles in Virginia, a community marked by generations of coal-mining in subterranean mines. Today, unemployment there is vast. Hillbilly heroin is a slang term for the prescription painkiller Oxycontin, often used by miners, which in high dosage has a heroin-like effect. Hillbilly Heroin, Honey is Hannah Modigh's first book.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
