I think “social geography” is a term that describes my photographic work and methodology… The photographs I produce question traditional and stereotypical notions of landscape, our place within it and collective roles and responsibilities in how and why we shape it the way we do. —Victoria Sambunaris

Her first book in over ten years, Victoria Sambunaris: Transformation of a Landscape, shares the nuances and majesty of the artist's practice in a large-format format. Each year, Sambunaris structures his life around a photographic journey through the American landscape. Equipped with a 5x7 inch camera, film, a video camera and research materials, she crossed the country alone by car for several months. His large-format photographs capture the ongoing transformation of the American landscape, with particular attention to growing political, technological, and industrial interventions. Part of her ongoing twenty-year series, entitled “Taxonomy of a Landscape,” this book encompasses the last decade of work, including a collection of materials that constitute the essential and incidental elements of her practice as a photographer and researcher. There are also archival documents of travel experiences and observations, such as snapshots, maps, road logs, diaries, geology and history books, mineral samples and artefacts. This title follows his first book with Radius, “Taxonomy of a Landscape”.
