Between 1897 and 1903 James Reuel Smith rode around Manhattan and the Bronx on his bicycle with a camera and a tripod and documented the springs and wells that were disappearing as the city grew and as Croton water reached more residents. He left money in his will for the New-York Historical Society to publish a book of the work, which they did in 1938. Stanley Greenberg revisited every site in the book on foot or by bicycle between 2016 and 2020. 'Springs and Wells' combines the photography of Stanley Greenberg with all the original photography and complete original texts by James Reuel Smith. The book is a dual portrait of New York's hidden water history and its palimpsest of urban transformation across more than a century.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
