Hereafter Called: 'Subject' is a visual journey through people and places in Europe. It contains a collection of personal, photographic experiments that explore the complexities of different relationships. In a total of 25 experiments, artist Samuel Otte examines the value of written, spoken and unspoken constructions inherent in every relationship - sometimes close by, sometimes far away. He followed a woman for two years while staying unknown to her (with her permission), let himself be limitlessly and anonymously used by other artists for their work, and lived an unnoticed life in an Italian village steeped in the mafia. The interior is made up entirely of scans of A4 clear plastic folders containing photographs and texts. The book imitates many of the physical characteristics of such a document pouch: the original folders dictate the format, it is light and floppy, and opens nicely.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
