Tuindorp Oostzaan was Amsterdam’s first true garden village, designed to provide working-class families with healthier living conditions through light, air, green space and dignified housing. Built near the shipyards yet separated from the city centre, the neighbourhood was structured around modest homes, each with its own entrance and gardens at the front and back.
Over time, the district expanded with the addition of areas such as the Vegabuurt, Tutti-Fruttidorp and Tuindorp Oostzaan-West, while the surrounding social and industrial landscape continued to evolve. As shipyard labour shaped everyday life for thousands of residents, the area developed a strong collective identity tied to working-class culture and industrial production.
With the disappearance of heavy industry and the transformation of Amsterdam North into a rapidly changing urban area, the neighbourhood has gradually become attractive to a new generation of city residents. Polder VIII traces these shifts through thirty years of photographs by Raimond Wouda, combined with images drawn from institutional archives and personal collections belonging to local inhabitants.
The project constructs a layered portrait of a community across time, reflecting on urban change, memory, housing and the transformation of social landscapes.
