Medical eponyms continue to shape scientific language by assigning the names of researchers to syndromes, diseases and medical discoveries. Yet many of these terms remain tied to figures whose work and careers were connected to the Nazi regime, raising unresolved ethical and historical questions.

The Weight of the Word examines this contested legacy through an extended visual essay combining archival photographs and texts. Focusing on the biographies of nine doctors associated with National Socialism, the project investigates the relationship between scientific achievement, political complicity and historical responsibility.

The work traces both the medical contributions and the crimes linked to these figures, while also addressing the processes of condemnation, erasure and contested remembrance that followed the collapse of the regime. By intertwining documents, images and historical research, the publication constructs a complex reflection on memory, language and the enduring presence of ideology within scientific culture.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
