When Petra Stavast moved into her landlady Ramya’s house in 2001, photography gradually became the foundation of their relationship and a shared form of communication. Over the years, Stavast created a quiet and intimate portrait of domestic life, observing the spaces, objects and routines that shaped Ramya’s everyday existence.

After Ramya’s death in 2012, the project expanded into a deeper investigation of her past. Stavast began exploring personal archives, family photographs and images taken by neighbours, uncovering fragments of a complex and unconventional life story. Among these discoveries were traces of Ramya’s involvement with the Rajneeshpuram commune founded by followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) in Oregon during the early 1980s.

Combining contemporary photographs, archival materials and moving-image documentation, the book reconstructs a layered biography shaped by spirituality, memory, migration and personal transformation. What emerges is both a portrait of one woman and a reflection on the ways photography can preserve intimacy, absence and the remains of lived experience.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
