There are places that do more than simply accommodate you: they absorb you, observe you, and return you to yourself in a different light. The Parkhotel Mondschein in Bolzano is one of them. Nestled between palm trees and mountains, between the calm of historic architecture and the vitality of the surrounding landscape, Swiss photographer Nicolas Polli undertook an artist residency that became a waking dream. From this experience emerged Where Moonlight Shadow Palm Trees, You Will Dream of Apple and Grapes (published by Ciao Press, the publishing house founded by Polli, and printed by Longo) — a title that already reads like a poem, or perhaps a spell.

Over the course of twenty-seven days, Polli inhabited the hotel as though it were a living organism: he photographed its breath, its silences, and its everyday imperfections. His images do not describe; they evoke. They do not document; they transform. Tidy rooms unravel, objects become sculptures, and fragments of light turn into narratives. The resulting book is a sensory journey suspended between wakefulness and dream, a meditation on the beauty of impermanence and on the ever-shifting boundary between the natural and the artificial, reality and fiction.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
