"Olaf Nicolai presents 80 photographs showing the ground in front of his feet, illuminated by the flash of his camera. Thus, the man who can hardly see in the darkness marks his path with the short flashes of a camera as he makes his way through Death Valley. Each of them illuminates a few centimetres of the ground, a tiny detail of the landscape, whose desert character, the hostility to life of its burning heat and the glaring daylight is well known. The photos mainly refer to the eerie darkness of the night, which no artificial light illuminates."

(Anne von der Heiden)

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
