Jaya Pelupessy uses photography to investigate the medium's status. Central to his work are the processes that lead to autonomous images; an examination of to what extent the process itself and the visibility of that process strengthens, invalidates, or delivers new autonomous images. Countless loops within his own work emerge, within which reproductions are again reproduced. For this publication, produced in collaboration with graphic designer Hans Gremmen, the making of the book is taken as a starting point. The text by Simon Winchester takes the three most complex verbs in the English language - set, put, and run - each possessed of so many meanings, senses and shadings of interpretation as to have occupied the minds working on the Oxford English Dictionary for months and years. The photography and the linguistic investigation of these three verbs mirror one another in exploring how meaning is made and remade.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
