When the inner-German border was established, West Germans attached leaflets, magazines and later books to gas-filled balloons fitted with a timer mechanism that dropped them into the GDR when the wind was favourable. Without any context the balloons could be many things: a child's plaything, land art, a performative installation, a meteorological measuring instrument, or a means of broadcasting political concerns. The book juxtaposes pictures from the Stasi archives with texts in the form of logs documenting the flights of the transport balloons.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
