One and Another State of Yellow studies the interplay between urban planning, ideologies and psychological warfare around two landscapes of war in the United States: El Paso on the United States-Mexico border and Washington DC, its capital city. El Paso is an American city that borders directly on Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. In 2010 Juarez was listed as the deadliest city in the world. At the same time El Paso was listed as the safest city in the United States. Washington DC can be seen as the US overall war and control apparatus. The work questions urban landscapes of deception, and ways in which architecture and urban planning are strategically employed to threaten or stimulate fear, or even to deceive an audience or enemy.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
