Visual artist and photographer Francesca Marengo (trained at IED Turin, 2013-2016, and MA Photography at Leeds Arts University, 2022-2023) conceives Orizonte as a visual path on the idea of voyage - moving through space and time. The core text is drawn from original 19th-century travel diaries documenting explorations across North and Central America, found among documents held in the archive of the Museo Civico Craveri di Storia Naturale in Bra, Piedmont. Marengo combines these diary extracts with appropriated vintage photographs and ornithological illustrations synthesised from the private collection assembled by the Bra naturalists Federico and Ettore Craveri during their expeditions. Her images either respond to the diary text or offer a free contemporary interpretation, layering archival and new material into narratives that read as connected and independent at once. The book frames a travel account of a universal story, working on identity, origins and memory through the appropriation and reinterpretation of found photographic material. Accompanying texts are by Emanuela Genesio. Published by Chippendale Studio, Milan, in 2020 as a hardcover trade edition (17 x 24 cm, 224 pages, 300 copies), alongside a limited companion edition of 30 numbered and signed copies (44 pages, 14 x 20 cm), printed in indigo on Fedrigoni papers and held unbound in an envelope.
