Transmontanus, the Latin term meaning "beyond the mountains", is an allusion to the wind coming from the Pyrenees that characterises the Catalan region of the Empordà, not only defining its identity but also bringing change and erosion.

Transmontanus is both a journal and a journey back to a landscape we knew as children. The journal describes a rediscovery: going back to that landscape and seeing it from a perspective that time has changed forever, and recognising that neither we nor our landscapes will ever be the same again.

Salvi Danés (Barcelona, 1985) studied at the Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (Catalonia School of Photographic Studies) focussing on documentary photography. His work has earned recognition at national and international competitions, for example winning the WSPA 2008 prize, the College Photographer of the Year, 2011 and the FNAC "New Talent in Photography".

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
