Portraits of male US Army recruits at the beginnings and ends of basic training
Imagery of hand-to-hand combat training interspersed with deconstructed words of the Soldier's Creed

Engage and Destroy is a subset of a long-term investigation into the cultural effects of the perpetual war in which we find ourselves. Made over the course of sixteen months at Fort Moore in Georgia, the project is comprised of portraits of male United States Army recruits at the beginnings and ends of their basic training cycle, interspersed with imagery of the hand-to-hand combat training that lies at the core of Army doctrine. Juxtaposed with the deconstructed words of the Soldier's Creed, the images are a meditation on culturally manufactured notions of hegemonic hypermasculinity in a time of global conflict—and how these notions meet with reality in the minds and bodies of the subjects of this work. The book continues Koxvold's research into masculinity, labour and militarism, and stands alongside Knives and Y.W.R.A.A. as part of his larger ongoing inquiry into the structures and contradictions of contemporary American power.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
