Black-and-white photographs made in and around Stourbridge
First volume of RRB's John Myers trilogy alongside The Portraits and The End of Industry
Reissue and expansion of Myers's self-published title of the same name
Middle England is the first volume of RRB Photobooks' John Myers trilogy and a reissue—greatly expanded—of Myers's foundational self-published title of the same name. Made entirely within walking distance of his Stourbridge home in the West Midlands, the photographs depict the houses, gardens, garage doors, hedges, neighbours and street corners of a particular kind of post-war English suburbia: quiet, often empty, unspectacular and oddly precise. Myers worked with a Gandolfi plate camera, giving his subjects the same patient frontal treatment as the American New Topographics photographers (Stephen Shore, Lewis Baltz, Robert Adams) with whom he is now commonly compared. Where his American contemporaries photographed the new American suburb, Myers photographed an older, denser, more melancholy English version—the back of a council house, the side of a Black Country pub, the curtain in a bay window, the brick gable, the bus stop. Together the images form a careful, gently humorous study of what is sometimes called the centre of England, made by an artist who insisted that his world began at his front door.
